Our history, open positions, and how you can support the lab.

AME LAB とはWhat is AME LAB?

AME LAB(Augmented Multisensory Experience Lab)は、人の知覚や運動の特性に着目し、主観的な現実感を問い直すことを目指す研究室です。AME LAB (Augmented Multisensory Experience Lab) focuses on the characteristics of human perception and movement, aiming to rethink our subjective sense of reality.

We study virtual reality broadly, centering on multisensory display, neural stimulation and motion generation. We also explore how consumer VR devices can be used in everyday life, especially in education and training, and work with companies on how VR will spread in society.

After consumer VR devices began to spread in 2016, the University of Tokyo established the Virtual Reality Educational Research Center (VR Center) in February 2018 as a cross-disciplinary research organization. Our lab started as a research group of the VR Center and is now based at the Information Technology Center.

Conveying sensations by combining touch, force and vestibular cues, and by making use of illusions.
Generating the motion of avatars and bodies to enrich experiences.
Applying VR and the metaverse to lectures and skills training.
Changing how we perceive sensations and body movements with electrical and other stimulation.

Our History

Founded as a research group

Amemiya joined the University of Tokyo and, together with Aoyama, who was already at the Virtual Reality Educational Research Center (VR Center), founded the lab as a research group. After sharing rooms with the Hirose, Kuzuoka and Narumi labs on the 8th floor of Engineering Building 2, we moved to the 5th floor of Engineering Building 1.

As the Kuzuoka–Amemiya–Narumi Lab

From FY2020, we worked as the Kuzuoka–Amemiya–Narumi Lab in the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, while continuing to run the lab as a research group of the VR Center.

To the Information Technology Center

Since FY2023, Amemiya has led the lab as an independent PI in the Information Media Education Research Division of the Information Technology Center. We now accept graduate students from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies.

Join Us

Graduate students (Master’s & Ph.D.)

We accept Master’s and doctoral students, including working professionals. Students from diverse fields such as engineering, information science, psychology, economics and the arts, and from other universities, are welcome. You can learn the skills you need through research.

Before applying, please contact Prof. Amemiya with what you would like to research and your strengths. We currently do not accept non-degree research students (kenkyusei).

Student internships

We accept undergraduate and graduate students interested in developing VR systems or researching interface devices as short-term interns at any time. Depending on the project, you may be able to take part online. We may not be able to accept you if your interests do not match our current projects.

Undergraduates interested in the lab are also welcome to ask about internships first.
