Research in the Lab
What is your approach to supervising graduate students?
Research topics are developed through discussion, taking each student’s interests and strengths into account. Students generally lead their own research projects, while collaboration within the lab is also encouraged.
We welcome discussions about challenging projects, including those centered on psychological experiments, VR system development, or collaboration with industry. Faculty members may also suggest topics when appropriate. You are not required to pursue exactly the project described in your application research proposal.
Before applying, we encourage you to explore the lab’s research, including its collaborative and commissioned research projects.
What support is available for students’ research?
Meetings with faculty members are arranged as needed. Students also receive mentoring from senior students and staff, and we encourage peer review among students.
How often does the lab meet?
We hold lab meetings approximately once a week to discuss research, review progress, and provide guidance. Everyone is expected to give an update, even if they do not yet have substantial results to report.
We also hold journal clubs, in which students take turns presenting and discussing papers they have selected, as well as workshops on technical and practical skills.
What should I study before joining the lab?
Useful areas include mechatronics, electrical circuits, experimental psychology, and programming. In addition to mathematics as a foundation for research, we recommend developing a solid grounding in statistics and information science.
English is essential for reading research papers and presenting your work. Although this is not an admissions criterion, English proficiency at CEFR B2 or higher is necessary for conducting research in the lab.

What research goals are students expected to work toward before graduation?
Master’s students
We aim for students to take ownership of a research project and gain experience in presenting their findings and writing research papers. By graduation, the goal is to have presented their work in English at a peer-reviewed international conference and to have submitted a paper for peer review, working toward publication.
Doctoral students
We aim for students to develop the ability to define their own research topics and carry projects through to completed papers without relying excessively on their supervisor’s support. The goal is to produce at least three research contributions through presentations at peer-reviewed international conferences and/or peer-reviewed publications.
Acceptance at leading conferences and publication counts are not our only goals. We also value the ability to conduct and communicate research that meets those standards. Students work toward a Ph.D. by gaining experience in identifying research questions and leading their own research.

Life in the Lab
Are there core hours when students must be in the lab?
No. Work that can be done outside the lab may be carried out in a suitable location. We focus on research progress rather than the number of hours spent in the lab.
At the same time, we value face-to-face exchanges, spontaneous discussions, and access to shared equipment. We encourage students to make active use of the lab while also using tools such as Zoom and Slack.
Does the lab have any rules?
As a relatively young lab, we develop and refine our practices through discussions among students and staff as needs arise. Everyone is expected to follow university and lab rules, uphold research ethics and safety standards, and treat others with respect. We welcome students who are willing to contribute actively to shaping the lab and its community.

Can I apply to more than one graduate school or program?
Yes, provided that the examination schedules do not conflict. Schedules and application requirements may change each year, so please check them carefully.
When contacting us, you are welcome to tell us where else you are applying and how you rank your preferences. You will not be disadvantaged if another graduate school is your first choice or if you have not yet decided.

Some courses require in-person attendance, so please consider how you would balance your studies with your work and discuss course attendance with us in advance. An extended study arrangement may also be available, subject to the rules of your graduate school or program.
Can I receive research supervision from the Amemiya Lab while remaining affiliated with another lab?
We may collaborate on research or provide advice. Whether Prof. Amemiya can formally serve as your supervisor or co-supervisor depends on the rules of your graduate school, the research topic, and agreement among the faculty members involved. Please consult your current supervisor first.
If you later apply to a doctoral program with Prof. Amemiya as your first-choice supervisor, check the application guidelines in effect at that time and contact us by the specified deadline.
